How to Build a Marketing Funnel

Marketing funnels are important sales tools for any business, be it small or large, e-commerce or brick and mortar.

A few steps are important to consider when designing a funnel.

  1. Select products that can be sold together, or are related to one another.
  2. The offers are the most important aspect of the strategy.
  3. Pick a trip wire offer, a products that is either free or inexpensive.
  4. Pick a core offer, a product that can be sold to people once they have decided to buy the trip wire.
  5. Pick an upsell offer, which may be an upgrade or high ticket item that can be sold with the core offer.

McDonalds is an Upsell King

I use McDonalds in the video as an example. McDonalds has a number of tripwire offers available. From their burgers to ice creams to coffee.

Let us say you walk into McDonalds for lunch for the first time ever. You are starving and am looking forward to the BigMac that your friend raves about. You place your order at the counter. You have just ordered a tripwire offer. The cashier immediately asks you “Would you like fries with that?” This is the upsell.

“Yes, sure” you reply. You think to yourself, it’s only an extra few dollars.

“Cool drink?” she asks.

“Yeah, why not.”

Those two additional items that you have ordered are the core offer and upsells. this is where most companies make their profit.

Another example, when you buy an XBox or Playstation, you will need to buy a base console and at least one controller to use the device. The additional controller, Kinetic, Games, racing steering wheel for Forza and HDMI cable are all additional peripherals that you may purchase over time to better your gaming experience. In this example, the console is the core offer, and the additional items are the upsells.

You can build this strategy into your online marketing strategy too.

  • good copywriting
  • patience

You may be thinking that there are too many emails in that sequence. If I asked you how many Pepsi billboards, product’s and advertisements you see on a daily basis, what would you say? You need to stay relevant to your customers to develop a long lasting relationship.

Good Copywriting Sells Products

There is no doubt that sales copy, headlines, slogans, catch phrases and descriptive text sell’s products. All written content should be easy to read and understand and be minimal enough for people to understand.

Good copywriters are relatively hard to find, but with services like and finding skilled individuals has become easier. You will also find a number of other skilled people for a whole host of services from web development to Facebook Advertising.
